Not Peachy Keen
July 17, 2008 Competition

rotten-peach.jpgIn California, apparently our enlightened bureaucrats, no doubt with the aid of established corporate farming interests, protect all Americans from evil, illegal fruit. What makes fruit evil and illegal? Well the size of course!

This will enable handlers to continue to ship fresh nectarines and peaches in a manner that meets consumer needs, increases returns to producers and handlers, and reflects current industry practices.

Yes of course – millions of parents do not wish to have the option of putting a smaller piece of fruit in their child’s lunch box, and millions of families do not wish to have the option of purchasing a smaller, but lower priced piece of fruit, rather than a larger, more expensive piece of fruit. While they are at it, why don’t we put a minimum size requirement on houses too? Don’t all consumers “need” at least 2,000 square feet, 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a huge yard? And clearly housing is more important for the social well-being of the people than some measly fruit, no?
