Cultural Participation
December 5, 2008 Flotsam and Jetsam

According to the survey for public participation in the arts, among which of the following activities do you think Americans were most likely to be engaged in the previous 12 months?

  • Classical music
  • Other dance (other than ballet)
  • Painting
  • Pottery
  • Photography
  • Sewing
  • Writing
  • Art purchases
  • Choir

In order, I would have guessed photography, choir and writing (these data are for 2002, so it would be fun to know if they have changed as the technologies in some of these areas has changed rapidly as well).

Well, I was not even close. I was most struck by the distribution by ethnicity in writing as compared to some other activities. Oh yeah, and in relative terms, we simply do not seem to like cultural activities very much.

  1. The gender distribution is pretty amusing too. It seems that men buy more art but actually participate in art a lot less.

  2. I wonder if that’s because men might consider certain pictures of women as “art.” I’m struck by how few listened to classical music.
