OK, Now I Get It

If you are not a fan of big, expansive, intrusive and special privilege granting government, you are a racist, a gay-basher, and now an assassin if you dare voice your concern about it.

My favorite passage just smacks of some of the most delightful elitism I have ever seen:

“I wish that we would all, again, curb our enthusiasm in some of the statements that are made,” Pelosi said. Some of the people hearing the message “are not as balanced as the person making the statement might assume,” she said.

“Our country is great because people can say what they think and they believe,” she added. “But I also think that they have to take responsibility for any incitement that they may cause.”

Gosh, really? So we should never say anything enthusiastically because some wack job might go on a spree of evil deeds? Does that apply to the rhetoric about former President Bush? Where were you when all of your constituents slapped bumper stickers on their car saying, “Bush Lied, Thousands Died”? Really, that seems to be more elevated rhetoric than the stuff you are speaking out against today. Yet I didn’t hear you worrying that some nutty liberal might do something reminiscent of what happened in the 1970s.

When folks like me went crazy at the idea of bailing out Wall Street firms and the enormous expansion of spending during the Bush orgy, and getting upset about the Iraq war, the rhetoric was at times far more pointed than that being directed at this administration. Yet you were silent.

I was going to claim that if someone is against big government, paternalism, corporatism, elitism, and so forth, that it was not cool for you. But that is not it at all. If anyone dare question the power of the philosopher kings that are running the show right now, that is the problem. It sucks to realize the emperor has no clothes, doesn’t it Ms. Pelosi.

When I was in college, even though nearly all of the professors were liberals, we really did enjoy academic freedom as students. It was only later that I had discovered the politically correct movement which pervaded the next generation, but which was promoted by our generation of professors. When I taught at Lehigh, this was not yet in full swing, but just a few years later it was.

Nancy Pelosi epitomizes such thinking, if you can call it thinking. She must be so drunk with power that she spits venom at anyone who threatens her, and has not a single thought about right or wrong, ever.

My daughter wrote me the other night, frustrated with the thinking of Michael Moore on Leno, and I assured her that it was easy to be ignorant. That should signal us that there is still hope, that she understood that.

Continuing best wishes for teaching reason on the shores of Lake Ontario.
