Just Asking

Is it me, or does it seem that the folks in the “E”nvironmental community actually WANT to see the globe get warmer and the environment get destroyed? After all, any time we show evidence of how things have been getting better, all kinds of things start getting hucked our way. And if it is in fact true that global temperatures have stabilized (as they have for the last decade) and do not resume their upward march, would this not be cause for celebration?

In case you missed it, Bret Stephens has a great column on this today in the WSJ.

I don’t think they all want the world to turn into a cinder, nor do I for the next hundred years or so.

I say, “They all,” because the president of Iran, under the direction of the Grand Ayatollah Khameni, has said that he would not mind the world turned into a cinder, which would mean the End of Days. Then Ahmadinejad would be delivered to heaven.

The Grand Ayatollah Khameni was educated in Moscow when the state religion was atheism, and I have my doubts about what he believes or thinks, but I digress.

Rather, there are many in the environmental movement who would be happy to see free institutions of all sorts fail, especially if it means the fall of the United States. They have invested their lifetimes on that premise, or its corrolaries.

I don’t doubt the sincerity of some, even many people, who even are Sierra Club members. Nobody can condone littering, dumping manure into the creek, or cutting a juniper for firewood in the high mountains.

But the fact that we live here, where it is still possible through economic freedom to be able to afford an abundant healthy life, is no cause for exchanging freedom for a regime that makes us all equal but poor and unfree.

I think the environmental community, and even the scientists from the IPCC, are wanting when it comes to scientific understanding. I also think they willfully ignore it. I doubt the sincerity of many of them.
