You should do a response article to this article. It claims that phosphorus is running out pretty fast. Apparently we don't need to really worry about it.

I seem to recall one of my middle school teachers assuring me that the Earth's tungsten reserves would run out by 2010, and as such the price of tungsten-filament incandescent bulbs would rise into the hundreds of dollars and the world would eventually be plunged into permanent darkness, or revert to using candles and torches at night. This was of course before CFL bulbs and LEDs were mainstream, but now that 2010 has rolled around I can't help but look back and laugh.

Wintercow, you make a powerful and indisputable point.

Back in the spring of 1971, I was more ignorant than I am today. It happened that I was talking to a student, not mine, and we got on the same subject about how the world was running out of all sorts of things, like copper. The student happened to have read a story to that effect in Time. This may have coincided with the report from the Club of Rome.

Two years later I could have rebutted his silly ideas, but I confess then I was unequipped to do so, beyond a "You don't really believe that?" comment.

For that reason I think you are making a huge contribution to economic understanding, even if it equips a dozen or so students to respond better than I did.

You should explain to your classes what 20-10-10 means to their well-being, and how it gets recycled. Extra credit for pointing out the EPA should not regulate potash.
