142 years ago today the Great Train Robbery took place in Indiana. The 7 members of the Reno gang made off with $96,000 in loot. That’s about $1.56 million in today’s dollars.
The record for the most Olympic medals ever won is held by Soviet gymnast Larissa Latynina. Competing in three Olympics, between 1956 and 1964, she won 18 medals.
I think you left a zero or so off that total, Wintercow. It depends on how you measure, but my reckoning is that gold is over 300% what it was in 1932: 340%, if you want to be picky. Using the rule of 72, at a mere 2,5% you double your money every 29 years, which is $3.1 million after 142 years. But just assume you make an average of five percent, which is two percentage points lower than the average earnings growth of the past century, pre-Obama, you get $3 billion.
One is left to speculate how the robbers spent or invested their money.
