Human Rights and Going Galt
August 12, 2010 Property Rights

Tom Palmer points us to two statements in the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights:

Article 24:

Everyone has the right to rest and leisure, including reasonable limitation of working hours and periodic holidays with pay.

Article 25:

Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.

I’ll be out in the Adirondacks for the next week or so living our Article 24.  But if I were a medical doctor, or a physical therapist, or a farmer, as per the people who must exist to provide the things in Article 25, will the “Rights Police” tear down our tent from Cranberry Lake and force me back to work? There’s a reason I chose not to be a medical doctor, and a reason I quit my investment banking job.

  1. Have fun! And don’t worry, we’ll keep an eye on you w/ a drone. 😉

  2. Yes, have a great time!
Article 26 says everyone has a right to a great time, especially if you are a UN diplomat. They go on safari. Perfessers have to pitch their own tents.

  3. Thanks for pointing this out. It really seems like a passage straight out of Atlas Shrugged. Frightening stuff…especially “lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control”
