Quote of the Day

Tyler Cowen weighs in on a debate “raging” regarding the complaints of a rich guy about his impending (increasing) tax bill:

Oddly — or perhaps not — it’s the people who feel they deserve their money who are the most likely to give it away.

I’m not going to weigh in. Rather, I’ll ask, is it OK if we “non-rich” guys complain on behalf of the really “rich” guys? After all, if they go Galt, my life will suck. And, if they are the “rich” now, at what point does the margin drop down to where we are?

    I saw that, too.

They way I see it, I’m not “defending rich guys.” I’m defending what I see as the morality or private property.

“… the system of private property is the most important guaranty of freedom, not only for those who own property, but scarcely less for those who do not.”

Err, that’s of course Hayek, not hayel. 🙂

    Right on, Speedmaster!

Wintercow, is the reference to Going Galt the new progressive expression for being Timothy McVeigh? (sp?)

I have wondered why we non-rich guys (relatively speaking, adjusted for age) argue as we do.

One reason is that we want every success, not just for ourselves, but for our children. Not “the children” but our own children. I want my daughter to live in a land of opportunity, and to be free.

I also want the rest to be free, starting with my friends, and ending with my enemies, who are only those who do not wish me, my friends and family, and themselves to be free.

The field is not lost, yet, Wintercow. Truth will prevail, especially among your dutiful students in your great seminar.

By the way, Adminejad blamed the world’s ills today on capitalism, no big surprise. On the other hand, I saw the President of Geogia today on Cavuto, and learned two things: he lived in Astoria when he went to Columbia, and he believes in freedom.
