Think of a substance that is 100% organic (actually, can it be less than that?).* Imagine that it is naturally occurring in many parts of the biosphere. Imagine that such a substance is biodegradable and serves as a food source for microbes. Imagine that these microbes are an important source of food for all kinds of “important” plants and animals and upward through the food chain.
Wouldn’t such a substance be miraculous? Wouldn’t it be celebrated on many a bumper sticker? It’s not. So maybe we should remedy this and create a new bumper sticker. What should it say?
OIL IS ORGANIC.
Now of course, that is an absurd thing to use to support the supposed harmlessness of oil. That is not my point. Kudos to those who get the point of this antagonism.
(*) Organic, after all, means carbon-based. I do not think “they” mean what the word actually means.
