Crackdown on “criminal” mothers who desperately try to enroll their kids in better schools:

An African-American mother of two, Ms. Williams-Bolar last year used her father’s address to enroll her two daughters in a better public school outside of their neighborhood. After spending nine days behind bars charged with grand theft, the single mother was convicted of two felony counts. Not only did this stain her spotless record, but it threatened her ability to earn the teacher’s license she had been working on.

I’m no relativist, but it makes more sense to jail mothers who don’t care enough to try to do this. Maybe if the rich paid just a little more in taxes we’d lick this tiny little problem.

And in other news: yet another famous economist wants America to be more like Europe. No thanks Jeff. And maybe that decline of civic virtue you admonish and maybe that decline of happiness and the life well lived you admonish has something to do with your ideas. Maybe, just maybe, is that possible?  So, here’s another person claiming that crony capitalism, or modern progressive corporatism is destroying America, and his conclusion is to tax all of us more? Sure Jeff, raise the stakes and raise the amount of loot floating around in Washington, and then you will be shocked when people work harder to get at it? To forget that possibility is nearly as preposterous as your claims that taxes spur growth. Read the rest – at least now we know where the “softness” of America is coming from. Leave me alone Jeff. Is that so hard to do?

  1. How about this thought. When a person does this they are considered to be stealing from taxpayers in another town.

But somehow, when I send my kids to the government-approved school, that’s not considered stealing from my neighbors?

  2. I am struck with the eloquence of Paul Ryan’s critique of Jeffrey Sachs, a “development economist” at Columbia. Compare the clear thinking of that article with the foggy reasoning of, say, Maxine Waters or Nancy “The Face” Pelosi. Oops, I am picking on women. How about budget expert Charlie Rangel?

The son of family friends of mine is an engineer who, after graduation from Carleton College (not Harvard!) got what seemed to be a great job with Volkswagen in Wolfsburg. It was a dream come true for Bill: he was actually designing cars. But he soon found out what living in Germany was like. All he could afford for living quarters was a tiny apartment with primitive appliances in his tiny kitchen and weird non-American fixtures in the bathroom. (Yes, a bathroom in his apartment, a luxury, as opposed to a shared bathroom down the hall.)

He also bought a speedy VW Golf so he could keep up on the Autobahn. Going 100 miles per hour in a Golf can be scary, but not as scary as his auto insurance for the Golf. So he tried to sell his teeny weenie car, but no one would buy it at the price he thought fair because every German in Germany apparently knew that insuring the car would send them to the poorhouse — if they had a poorhouse. You stupid American, didn’t someone tell you that German insurance companies know the risks of driving a tiny car on the Autobahn?

After ten months at work, Bill was ordered to take his vacation, a two month paid vacation. This is the way the Germans conquer unemployment: everyone takes a two month vacation, like it or not. And the reason Volkswagens are so expensive is that the people who work for Volkswagen and the rest of the happy, lederhosen-clad German people is that the workforce, arguably some of the best in the world, are idle two months out of twelve per year.

Fortunately for Bill, he soon became fluent in German and met a gorgeous German girl who was only too happy to bug out of Germany with Bill, who’s still working as a mechanical engineer in the greatest country in the world, the United States.

  3. How is this different from giving in-state tuition to illegal immigrants? We praise the politicians who support that.
