It turns out that there has been a confession in the Heartland Incident:

In an effort to do so, and in a serious lapse of my own and professional judgment and ethics, I solicited and received additional materials directly from the Heartland Institute under someone else’s name. The materials the Heartland Institute sent to me confirmed many of the facts in the original document, including especially their 2012 fundraising strategy and budget. I forwarded, anonymously, the documents I had received to a set of journalists and experts working on climate issues. I can explicitly confirm, as can the Heartland Institute, that the documents they emailed to me are identical to the documents that have been made public. I made no changes or alterations of any kind to any of the Heartland Institute documents or to the original anonymous communication.

And of course, what would you expect? That he is being lauded for his heroic and courageous acts (leave aside for the time being what is actually in the Heartland documents, or that Heartland is but a pimple of influence and funding as compared to the folks Gleick is committing fraud on behalf of:

Whistleblowers – and that’s the role Gleick has played in this instance – deserve respect for having the courage to make important truths known to the public at large. Without condoning or promoting an act of dishonesty, it’s fair to say that Gleick took a significant personal risk – and by standing and taking responsibility for his actions, he has shown himself willing to pay the price. For his courage, his honor, and for performing a selfless act of public service, he deserves our gratitude and applause. (wintercow emphasis added)

A selfless act of public service. Boy, sometimes I get down thinking we are headed down the toilet, now I know what it’s like to be firmly ensconced in the sewage.

UPDATE: Megan McArdle’s reactions are worth reading.

Yup, the rules are different for the all-knowing left. As their motives are “pure,” they can do no wrong. Maddening.

A lot of huffing and puffing on the Smogblog. Although I did not read that guy’s whole ouvre, I did not detect any facts to rebut skeptics. The guy is a really windy writer, so it is hard to tell the point of his “manifesto.”
