Until 1969 the state of Pennsylvania offered a $5 bounty for each and every Goshawk that was killed.

For those of you interested, as I am, in the state of environmental protection before the EPA was founded, you would enjoy the story of Rosalie Edge and her efforts to protect the hated hawks in Southeastern Pennsylvania. We were able to drive by Hawk Mountain a few years ago but unfortunately did not have a chance to spend time there — we had other duties to attend to.
