Election Season Reminder
As a tax-exempt entity, the University must abide by federal and state laws prohibiting the use of its facilities, funds, email, personnel, or other resources to promote or support individuals or organizations campaigning for public office. Faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to be active and engaged citizens. However, PERSON, senior vice president and general counsel, reminds the University community that when speaking out on political issues, if they mention their University association, they should make clear that the views expressed are their own and not intended to represent the University. I bolded and highlighted that sentence near the end. This is but one illustration of the absurdity of many of our “laws.”
Coworker just told me he was listening to NPR either yesterday or this morning and Louise Slaughter was on being interviewed.
I’m paraphrasing of course, but he told me she said that power is slipping away from workers, we must repeal Citizens United, and that a lot of people would like to see us return to child labor here in the U.S. Further, it would be better of us all if ALL workers were in a union. And if you like your 40 hour workweek, thank a union member.
Speedmaster gets to the heart of the thought-control police problem. Academic freedom got thrown under the bus long ago. I hope WC checks his tuna sandwich next time he is in the library lunch room, and watches out for guys with gold-handled canes.
