The entire installed capacity (rated capacity, not actual) of solar power in the United States is 1.39 gigawatts of power (about 2GW if you add in solar thermal).

The largest single coal plant in the United States is over twice as large as the total amount of solar capacity in the entire country.

  1. That is a big plant, four cooling towers, even! The shot of it is from the air, I guess three or four thousand feet, and as the reference says, it is visible to aircraft landing at Hartsfield. Norfolk Southern coal trains which coordinate with the Burlington Northern Santa Fe, never stop to unload the fuel from Wyoming. From 30,000 feet, the trains are invisible, the plumes from the towers visible to alert pilots on a clear day. This is one of the world’s largest single-point emitter of carbon dioxide, which, if not consumed by breathless plants in Lahore, may be dissolved by a rain storm somewhere between Atlanta and the Canary Islands.
