Another doozy from Steven Greenhut’s book Plunder:

82% of California Highway Patrol Officers in 2002 took disability retirements.

And California policemen are permitted to take disability retirements from virtually any injury. If you get back injuries from your weekend skiing excursions, those injuries are treated as occurring on the job. And guess who pays for these retirement benefits? Imagine if 8 in 10 workers at your company or organization became “disabled” on the job …  maybe my neighbor is a retired policeman. He spends his disability years scrounging the neighborhood for scrap metal – cutting it and welding it to prepare for resale.

And how about this one:

Between 2001 and 2003, an average of 63% (of Los Angeles County) of retired firefighters claimed a disability during their final year of service.

Claiming a disability during your final year of service allows you to have a portion of your retirement pension protected from taxation, among other advantages.
