Think of a substance that is 100% organic (actually, can it be less than that?).* Imagine that it is naturally occurring in many parts of the biosphere. Imagine that such a substance is biodegradable and serves as a food source for microbes. Imagine that these microbes are an important source of food for all kinds of “important” plants and animals and upward through the food chain.

Wouldn’t such a substance be miraculous? Wouldn’t it be celebrated on many a bumper sticker? It’s not. So maybe we should remedy this and create a new bumper sticker. What should it say?

OIL IS ORGANIC.

Now of course, that is an absurd thing to use to support the supposed harmlessness of oil. That is not my point. Kudos to those who get the point of this antagonism.

(*) Organic, after all, means carbon-based. I do not think “they” mean what the word actually means.

I think that when they say “organic” they really just mean, “votes for Democrats.” 😉

Any politican should be able to tell you that the most organic substance is horse manure.

  3. Millions of gallons of it seeps from ocean floors each year as well. But hey, if it’s “natural” it must be okay; if God did it it’s beautiful and safe and healthy but if men altered it in any way it is evil and shameful.

All modern chemicals, medicines, preservatives and fuels are just natural products that have been combined and refined in different ways. Everything is natural, and it is a strange and unfortunate religious belief that keeps people away from modern technologies that might make life easier, and leads many to demand that we return to living in straw huts, living without running water, and using tree bark and unfiltered beer to kill pain.
