How do you think Americans would look back on WWII and the fight against Nazi-ism is its associated toxic enterprises if we stayed out of it entirely, and the Australians or the Mexicans saved the world from speaking German?

And from the left’s pantheon of great “progressives,” the tyrant FDR.

Yes, no doubt Hitler shuddered in fear of the vaunted Mexican navy army, and army air forces.

    We would be shamed.

Well its clearly not that simple. Had the US remained outside of the conflict, the world would be speaking Russian today, to be more precise. How would we, like that? Had we stood out of the war, WW2 would be remembered as the war that turned Europe communist.

One can make the case that the modern world, globalization and the unprecedented level of free trade and democracy we have today, are direct results of those actions. Western Europe and Asia were saved from fascism, colonialism collapsed as a result, and eventually communism collapsed from that pressure.

RIT_ Rich, well put/ Not to mention the extermination of millions more that would have occured at the hands of either the Stalin or Hitler.

Well my view is, whether we like it or not, if we don’t “lay down the law”, someone else will. If we think that someone else will be more beneficial to the cause of freedom and free markets, then by all means. But I don’t think so. The results are what matter, and the results of American “interventionism” and “policing the world” have been the most free world, politically and economically, humanity has ever experienced. Ron Paul “blame America for everything” fans, can’t convince me otherwise. They certainly can’t convince me that it hasn’t been worth it; America’s level of life is evidence that it was worth it. Where would we get all the benefits from trade with Korea, Japan, Europe, Taiwan, China etc, were it not for American military intervention that made it all possible today?

Sure there is wasteful “policing”, like Afghanistan and Iraq. But they are the exceptions that prove the rule.

I’m not sure invading & policing Iraq will turn out to have been a bad thing (and it’s entirely possible we’re ending it too early — and a little more help from our “friends” in Europe would have been nice in that respect). We did exactly that in Korea and 60 years later we’re still there. The North Korean paradise suggests we did the right thing, at least I’m pretty sure the South Korean’s are happy with our commitment there.

It’s hard to say how things would have worked without American support whatsoever (lend, lease), but my guess is that the Russians would have won in Europe. But Russian or German, with their economic system being collectivist, it would have collapsed in time. I doubt Russia would have been successful in an American invasion; nearly all our citizens have guns.
