Machete -isms

A great post on “Machete Libertarianism” something that I try to urge my students not to practice. Are there times to pull out the machete? Of course. But read the whole thing carefully.

A good read, thanks. I’ve been guilty more than a few times.

    Me too, Speedmaster.

Thanks for the post, WC. I am glad you scour the blogosphere for us, giving us red meat to hack with our machetes, and stuff to dissect with scalpels, assuming we might know how to use those tools.

I remember a cartoon showing one vulture saying to another vulture, “[Screw] patience, I’m going to kill something.”

Good essay! I wonder, though, to what extent ‘libertarianism’ can be replaced by ‘abstract microeconomic principles’ in the case of using a set of axioms to explain something without familiarity of a subject’s empirical evidence, especially re:

“Many intellectuals are prone to this type of simplified, self-aggrandizing argumentation. The advantages are obvious: a universal theory consistently applied can broaden your ability to intelligently converse on many subjects without having to actually acquire the knowledge needed to refute the opposition on their own terms. ”

    Are there valid parallels?
