Do Paul Krugman and his friends of the left really want to go back to the 1950s in terms of government policy? If they truly believe that, then I look forward to their endorsement of returning to the left hand side of every one of the charts from this report.

Here is one illustration of what’s in the report:

Chart 10

I know, I know. It’s Heritage, so we can ignore it. But here’s the catch: the modern Progressive movement ought to be pointing to all of this as a success, an achievement, a vision for the future of America – that’s what this is all about isn’t it? By the way, for those of you clicking through to the creepy campaign website, notice that we forgot to include Julia’s death – maybe under my plan she’ll be guaranteed a free and green burial. Also notice the absence of marriage or a spouse. Her son Zachary makes a guest appearance, but otherwise the only relationship to be seen is between Julia and the state. Yes, clearly all of those who think that presentation is creepy must want Julia to die a young painful death after a life of discrimination and oppression. Yes, that’s exactly how I envision Julia’s life.

I am not on the list to get the Julia stories.

Julia wants all-day kindergarten, too, starting at age four. Big savings for Julia. The extra money does not have to go to her absent husband.

The lessons of history, confirmed by the evidence immediately before me, show conclusively that continued dependence upon relief induces a spiritual disintegration fundamentally destructive to the national fiber. To dole our relief in this way is to administer a narcotic, a subtle destroyer of the human spirit. It is inimical to the dictates of a sound policy. It is in violation of the traditions of America. Work must be found for able-bodied but destitute workers. The Federal Government must and shall quit this business of relief.

    …sorry, 1935…

Good research, Brent. Maybe WC should have said that Krugman longs for the G. Rexford Tugwell era. I bet also that you did not find that quotation in any undergraduate textbook.

Yes, WC’s graph is from Heritage, but they do use reasonable data. Who you gonna believe, Al Jazzera?

I so enjoy this site… I’m gonna miss it when we are finally doomed…

That graph tells a story of relentless irresponsibility and three or four generations of selfish recklessness. I would like to have twenty food fights with the equality and debtor folks, who as the graph shows have won the fight so far.
