Then I read this.
It occured to me that there appears to be precedent right here in the U.S. Remember the Big Dig? What a resounding success! Wasn’t it 7X over budget? There were wonderful doses of corruption and, of course, the death of a commuter due to shoddy construction. What multiple of $ spent on that fiasco is being contemplated under this “stimulus?”
This has been going on for quite awhile in Japan. One of my best friends has lived in Japan for the past two years, teaching English. We regularly keep in touch, and he consistently criticizes the Japanese government for this (not to mention their “nationalized health care”, of which he is also not a fan). Disclaimer: He’s a Democrat and voted for Obama, albeit for other reasons than his economic prowess.
