In the North, unlike in the South prior to the Civil Rights movement, black children could attend school and their parents had some choice in the work they did. Here is some data comparing 1900 to 1930:

  1. In 1900, 45% of blacks were illiterate.
  2. By 1930, only 16.4%. (it was 70% in 1880)

Some other fun facts: by 1930, black unemployment nationally was below white unemployment.
