As I was baking cookies last night and watching the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl, a commercial came on from one of the many businesses in the Berkshires that tries to appeal to the do-gooder, environmentalist customers in this part of the world. I can’t blame the business for what I heard, because he needs to attract customers, and the way to do that is to give them what they want, but man oh man, do the folks around here understand basic science, or economics?

The commerical was from a wood-pellet stove advertiser and he was telling customers to purchase his wood stoves because … you know what’s coming next … it will help in the fight against global warming! The reason is that wood pellets are renewable and oil/gas/coal are not renewable. Uhhhhh … but isn’t wood the most primitive of fuel sources? Doesn’t it burn dozens of times more carbon than methane and other non-renewable fuels?

What’s this about? How can we have gotten to a place where customers completely deceive themselves into decisions which are based on total falsehoods and fear?

This will make some of you chuckle too. I shouldn’t dignify it by taking it too seriously, but the town of Great Barrington could do more to fight global warming by banning any ONE citizen from using a pellet-stove than it could from turning off all of the Christmas lights all season long.

What a fiasco this place is.
